My car is overheating a lot and my oil looks like it's getting a little antifreeze in it. What's the problem?

My trusted mechanic told me that I most likley need a new head gasket, which will run upwards of $600. Is this a good idea? The car has been overheating, and I (or my mechanic) could not find a leak anywhere, but the oil is starting to look cloudy of antifreeze! The car has been working great other than overheating. I'll fill up the radiator, and a few days later it will start overheating again and the radiator will not be full! My mechanic told me not to drive it until they can fix it, in order to keep it from screwing anything else up. I appreciate any advice anyone can give me. Thank you for your help!My car is overheating a lot and my oil looks like it's getting a little antifreeze in it. What's the problem?
your mechanic is correct. if you continue to drive this vehicle, your engine will seize(freeze), and need to be replaced. shortly before that happens, you will notice a trail of white smoke coming from your exhaust. this is a sure indication that the leak has worsened and you are about to lose your engine. My car is overheating a lot and my oil looks like it's getting a little antifreeze in it. What's the problem?
without knowning with car you have,i would say your mechanic is right.if you keep on driving it,it will cost you lots more.600 bucks is cheap compared to 2500 bucks.
The first thing you need to do is stop driving it immediately! The water pump died on my car while on the freeway and before I knew it overheated and died. The result of this was a cracked head. You could pay someone to do the work or if your up for a challenge you could do it yourself. Just get the shop manual for your car and it will tell you step by step instructions on how to remove/install the cylinder head. Once you get the head off you'll need to take it to a machine shop to be tested. If it is cracked you'll need to get a replacement from the junkyard or buy a new one. If you get one from the j-yard you'll have to have it tested at the machine shop too.
head gasket, hopefully you didn't warp the head.
Most mechanics can do a test on your radiator to see if there is exhaust fumes getting into the cooling system. They use a liquid which changes color if there is carbonmonoxide present in the cooling system. They usually charge around $10.00 but it will tell you for absolute sure if it is the head gasket or maybe a cracked head. Yes it is not a good idea to drive it if antifreeze is getting into the oil at you might damage your engine bearings.

This is a very common problem in cars unfortunately.
Yup, deffo blown a gasket. Price seems about right, as is advice!
headgasket, cracked head , cracked block. but more than likely a cracked head. pay the money and get it done right.
Your mech. sounds right, though do stop driving it! antifreeze in the oil literally fries a engine... if you've gone for some time like this, might as well either get a new engine, or have this one rebuilt, it is hell on the bearings and eats em up in no time.
Most likely a blown headgasket.

You should have it repaired right away or you could lose your engine.
Yeah, sounds like a head gasket. Get some other estimates but that sounds close to the cost of repair. The gasket kit itself is cheap but the labor to replace it can vary. If you don't have the issue fixed soon you'll either overheat or hydrolock the engine.
Hm ya it could be a head gasket. 600 sounds to much for a head gasket. I bet he including the time in that. If it would cost 600 to fix i would not take it to him. Phone up some other mechanics in your area and ask them how much it would cost to replace a head gasket.
you have a blown head gasket. The $600 price will include machining the heads back down IF the heads are warped. If not you will save $250
sound a bit pricey, change to thermo in it first and chane all the hoses also.thats was all i needed.
Change head gasket asap or else you might have to change the head or even the rings if you ignore or wait and see !

Overheating shold be attended to asap. The sooner you remedy, the less you spend and your CONSTANT WORRY will disappear.
thats the head gasket, you can probably do it yourself, just get a manual, the gasket and the right tools. the gasket shouldnt be too much, and 600 seems about right. it usually takes around three to four hours on some cars, sometimes more or less depending on the car, and they will increase the price of the gasket by usually around three hundred percent

Why did my dad check the oil and water in my moms car today when he got home?

My has not been no where today so the car has not burned any oil or leaked any water, he just checked them when he got home. Why did my dad check the oil and water in my moms car today when he got home?
He is obviously trying to kill her.Why did my dad check the oil and water in my moms car today when he got home?
Regular maintenance on the car requires these items be checked on occasion. He might think, wrongly, as a woman she is not going to check these things regularly.

If I were looking to prove a spouse had been somewhere they shouldn't have been, I'd be checking the gas in the car and the temperature of the car (by placing my hand on the hood) to see if the car has been moved.
An engine that hasn't been run for a period of time is the only way to check fluid levels. Or he is an oil and water eating Alien from an other planet.

Why does my dad check the oil and water in my moms car for her when her sisters husbands never check theirs?

I have 10 answers, need 20 please. Why does my dad check the oil and water in my moms car for her when her sisters husbands never check theirs?
I need 10 answers as to why you have to ask this same question 10 times a day, every day, for months on end. You are not permitted to ask again unless I get my 10 answers. Why does my dad check the oil and water in my moms car for her when her sisters husbands never check theirs?
It is always good to check the oil in your car. If you don't have enough oil in your car, it might overheat the engine. If you run it without oil for too long, it could screw up the engine so that you either need to buy a new car, or buy a new engine for it. In other words, no oil for an extended period of time could essentially ';blow the engine';. I know when I was 16, I didn't know you had to check the oil level of your car regularly, so I ran it with barely any oil in it for a long time. I, at the time, didn't know why I had to keep adding more and more coolant for the radiator, but the coolant in the over-flow tank and the radiator kept on dissipatingg. So I kept on ading coolant to it. It got worse and worse, evaporating more and more rapidly. Until one day I popped my hood when my dad was nearby, and said to him, ';God, what is it with my truck and coolant, I add more coolant weekly, and it still eats it right up... Maybe I have a cracked radiator.'; My dad said to me that I should check my oil level. I said I don't even know where to begin to do that. He showed me and I believe it or not was running it with no oil in the engine. He showed me how to fill it up, and told me what was happening mechanically to my truck.

What motor oil does is it slowly drips into the engine and lubricates the pistons. It does this so that the engine porduces less heat. Think about it. With no oil, pistons are rubbing against things up and down at very high rates of rotational speeds. anywhere from 1000 to 4000 rotations per minute. If you don't have any oil in the engine, it produces tons and tons of friction. This causes heat, and will eventually overheat and stall your engine. Worse comes to worse, it will blow your engine.

The answer is, depending on how frequently your dad checks it, he is doing the most intelligent thing out of the two. Your brother-in-laws should be checking all of their cars oil levels and coolant levels. By the way, usually coolant is a mixture of 50% water and 50% Anti-Freeze, this making it not be able to freeze in the winter. In emergency situations, I've heard of people putting water in their overflow tanks, or any liquid, anything to cool the engine.

Hope this helps,
Some people do...some don't. Jake, oil RUNS through your engine not slowly drip. If i come out in the morning and no fluid is on the ground then i figure it must be still in the engine so i don't check it...but you should.

How is oil from Iraq turned into the gas that you put in your car?

OIL from IRAQ never gets to your car. American oil refining companies have been thrown out of IRAQ since 1980. They just received some contract THIS YEAR.

Most of American crude come from Canada and MEXICO. But because all the prices are international, the price from middle east affects the price in Canada.

Good Luck...

=== UPDATE ===

Oh OK. So to answer that question; the process of making gasoline form crude is similar to the process of making moon shine. Basically the crude is distilled untill you boil off the gasoline and then it condense. The actuall process is called FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractional_鈥?/a>

Because they are distill more than one kind of fuel at once. Then the gasoline is all put into the gasoline pipeline that travels to different states (mostly FROM few states like Texas and NJ). Oh yes, ALL the gasoline company shares the same pipeline. They are basically all the same gas.

From the other end point the gasoline is trucked to your gas station. How is oil from Iraq turned into the gas that you put in your car?
Same way they make whiskey - in a still. In the case of gasoline, the equipment is a lot larger. They heat up the oil and tap it off somewhere up a column, where it cools and condenses. The temperatures are controlled so the tap is always at the right temperature for the kind of petroleum they want.

That applies to oil from other places than Iraq. How is oil from Iraq turned into the gas that you put in your car?
Crude oil is turned into various other forms including gasoline through a refining process. The refining process is basic distilling where the oil is heated and it separates into different components.

That is the very simplistic explanation. For more detail, google ';refining crude oil into gasoline';
any kind of crude oil go to oil refinery %26amp; the gasoline you use for your car is one of 8 prudacts at list comes frome the grude oil .

- the deferent of the crude oil is the purity %26amp; percentage of the white prudact in it .

- i hope that i reach your question .

have a nice day
Using a process called fractional distillation.

If you have a car that comes with sealed transmission, Are you supposed to change the oil every 100000 miles?

I have a 2001 chevy malibu and it has 94000 miles on it. I know that a tune-up and transmission oil change must be done after the 100000 in more of the american cars.If you have a car that comes with sealed transmission, Are you supposed to change the oil every 100000 miles?
Check you owners manuel for recommended service intervals. You may think your tranny is seal but you can still have the level checked on this and you can still service it. It will be kinda pricy because the filter kit is expensive on this cars. NOTE: Ask questions and be sure they can srvice it. Some quick lube shops wont even touch your car because they are not familiar with the trans so make sure they check it to see if it is something they can do. Of coarse I already know LOL so anyquestions feel free to ask.If you have a car that comes with sealed transmission, Are you supposed to change the oil every 100000 miles?
You simply must do it. If not - it is very dangerous not only for you but to all people around you.
You can change it on a sealed.... these sealed transmissions are a load of crap.... they need servicing or you'll be ending up buying a new one (which is more then likely what they want)... at 94,000 miles... some would treat it as a black box.... leave it till it goes because thats too long of a run on the original fluid, and sometimes after changine it, the transmission starts acting up.
IF it has never been changed, I would not recommend changing it now. It should have been done at about 30,000 mile intervals. which means, 3 times by now? Often, your transmission has become used to the old, dirty, sticky fluid and if you put new, clean fluid in, it will remove all the build up and deposits that MAY be keeping your trans working as is. If anything, just drain what you can without flushing, and add enough new fluid to hit the fill line.
you can't, on a sealed tranny!
no a lot of newr vehicles use a synthetic type of oil and should not be changed un less there is a problem wich requires breaking th transmission case apart. to be certain on your specific model consult yor maintenance schedule in your owners manual or a gm dealer

  • Does it seem like all car engineers figure the location for the oil filter as the last thing on their designs?

They seem to cramp them into the strangest places-

What do you think ?Does it seem like all car engineers figure the location for the oil filter as the last thing on their designs?
Definitely... Because it's a design that can virtually be placed anywhere... it's a design that doesnt require to be efficient, unlike the other parts of the car...Does it seem like all car engineers figure the location for the oil filter as the last thing on their designs?
actually I think engineers never work on anything they design .If they did i think they would change a lot of things.
Car dealers want you to bring the vehicle in for the service. They don't want the customer to do the work so there put in places that most people don't want to bother with. God Bless
yep back in the day you just open the hood and you could see it

What does it mean when the oil from your car is leaking?

Some engine oil leakage is quite acceptable and no maintenance or repair is required. However if it's leaking too fast or leaking into areas that oil shouldn't be (like on the timing belt etc), then your forced to fix the oil leak. Watch out for repair shops who may claim you need to fix an oil leak with a major repair that doesn't really need any repair at all.

http://autorepair.about.com/od/otheroddd鈥?/a>What does it mean when the oil from your car is leaking?
It could be front or rear seals, a bad cam cover or valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, loose or stripped oil pan plug, leaky oil pan gasket or a hole in the oil pan itself. And those are just a few of the places that oil could escape from the engine.

Then there are the power steering system, transmission or trans axle that could also leak an oil-like substance. What does it mean when the oil from your car is leaking?
You have to check the oil and replace what is leaking out so you don't damage your engne. Then find out where the leak is and look in the repair manual or on line to find out how to repair it. If you can't do it yourself, take it to a good repair shop.
Depends where it is leaking from.
It means there is a leak.

    Could you be more specific?

Putting in different brands of motor oil in a car, will that effect engine performance?

Does it matter which motor oil brand to buy-Mobil, quaker state....Putting in different brands of motor oil in a car, will that effect engine performance?
In an emergency situation, it is more important to have oil than to worry about mixing brands. Outside of that, the general rule of thumb is not to do so, because difference companies use different additive chemistries, and those chemistries *might* react badly. This was much more of an issue 20 or 30 years ago. Nowadays, getting an API service rating SM, you'd have to be a magician to use different additives from everyone else, so the difference is mostly in tweaking the amounts of additives. Not saying they are all the same, just less of an issue than it once was, and you should still try to choose a brand and stick to it. As another answer noted, if you want to change brands, do so at oil change time.

Oh, it is OK to mix synthetic and mineral oil, or synth-blends: a synth blend *is* a mix of synthetic and mineral. Just try to keep it in the same brand family.

Also, mixing grades of oil is not a big deal, just make sure you use the grade oil recommended by the engineers who designed the engine, not some weekend mechanic who has dispensed the same advice for 40 years. Engines have changed, and the engineers know the tolerances of the engine better than the mechanics...at least for the first 100,000 miles...Putting in different brands of motor oil in a car, will that effect engine performance?
Different brands of oil will not affect the performance, but it best not to mix normal oil with synthetic. Also make sure you put in the correct grade of oil to suit your engine.
Don't mix different types - ie

Don't mix mineral oil with synthetic or semi-synthetic.

Don't mix Duckhams with anything else.

Usually mixing different brands of the same type and spec will be OK.
No, switching brands when doing oil changes is fine. The only no-no I've been told is not to mix different viscosities (doing so changes it) even though I've read (somewhere else) some people do it.
dont matter what brand and most of time dont matter what weight.. i use 10w40 with all my cars have since the 70's

Is it ok to put 2050 oil in a car that's supposed to have 2030?

My car burns oil really fast.. someone told me that 2050 would fix the problem and not run out as quick.. just wanted to check and make sure this was true.. and it wouldn't mess my car up.Is it ok to put 2050 oil in a car that's supposed to have 2030?
well there is no such thing as a 20w30 oil. And for the 20w50 it will not fix anything. It is thicker and may slow the burning but it is terrible to use in the winter. If you live where it is cold then do not use it. And it is so thick you will notice less power the engine has to work hard to pump the thick oil. Try using a high mileage oil and see if that helps the burning slow down. It has an additive package that reconditions the valve seals and helps the engine to not burn soo much oil.Is it ok to put 2050 oil in a car that's supposed to have 2030?
if your car is burning oil that much i think its a bit late to worry if it will mess it up. But not 20w50 wont make that much difference but you sure it uses 20/30 to start with ???
20w50 might help, but it depends on why it is burning oil. Depending on what the problem is, you might not notice a difference. Either way, it won't damage anything unless you start it up cold and rev it up. The thicker oil won't flow quite so fast when it's cold. Sometimes, those engine oil treatments help a little.
you use a 20w-50 in an engine that calls for (beings there is no such thing as 20w-30 I will use 10w30) 10w-30. you will prob starve the engine of oil and the oil will not circulate everywhere in the engine that its suppose to go. you might be able to use a 5w-40 or a 10w-40. its thicker and might be able to be used in place of 10w-30. what does your owners manual calls for as far as oil weights?

so best bet is to either rebuild the engine or get a new engine or get a new car. that would be a temp fix and it will get worse.
I've found that it's true. The 20W50 doesn't burn as fast. Because it is so heavy and thick it takes longer to circulate in your engine when it's cold. So best you let it warm up a bit before driving it on cold mornings.
there right about not burning as fast but if you live in a cold climate the heavier oil makes your car harder to start and takes longer to lubricate your engine in cold weather thus wearing out your parts inside the engine quicker.

  • Why is my car going through so much oil?

I have to put it 2 quarts a month. It doesn't have any leaks so I have no idea why it goes through so much oil. Its a Chevy Prism Lsi 98.Why is my car going through so much oil?
typically as a car gets older and racks up mileage, wear occurs and gaps in the piston rings grow larger, allowing more oil to seap thru. try a higher viscosity grade oil. check the piston compressions. look around your engine to see if you have a gasket leak. check the floor underneath your car. make sure your oil pan bolt is secure. Why is my car going through so much oil?
The Chevy Prism isn't really a car. It's a giant pencil sharpener with seats. Since it only weighs like 300 pounds, it won't qualify for cash for clunkers. I'd just take it out and set it on fire. But if you insist on keeping it, you might start by looking at the valve covers. It's a common place to leak. So is the intake. Check the oil pan. Make sure the plug is in tight and that it's not leaking from the pan gasket. If it's leaking out anywhere else, chances are, it's not worth fixing. If there's no leaks, it might have bad rings. It's DEFINITELY not worth fixing if it has bad rings. Does it smoke at all? Also, how many miles are on it? How many miles are you putting on it? If you're putting 1,000 miles on it for every quart of oil it goes through, that's not too bad. You could even try using a heavier weight oil. Put some Marvel Mystery Oil in there. We need a few more details. I still think you should just set it on fire though.
Ok what you got is another word for geo witch is the worlds biggest peace ok this is how you fix this ok find a dump park it and walk away it will save you money. Shitys break down allot its known fact that chevy has the most in stock parts hell they even got smart and made it own shops called goodwrinch. sears even into that ****. Best thing for it is to dukes of hazerd that bad boy if it can make it up the ramp lil 3 cylinders.
Does it smoke? Either you are burning oil through your piston rings (It will smoke), or you have a blown head gasket and the oil is getting into your radiator fluid. Check your oil dipstick for water.

Also, are you using the proper weight oil...

For older cars, try putting in 20w50... thats what I use in older cars, it seals the rings better and burns a lot less. Maybe even try a bottle of STP (aka motor honey).
bc ur car sux... get a new 1 sell this 1 n say nothings wrong with it.
some GM cars have weak oil seals. maybe yours broke open?
you have a leak somewhere or you mite need an oil change!!!
    i don't know.

Well depending on how far your grandmother lives maybe he did it to see how much oil was used to get there. Maybe theres no reason at all and he just felt like checking the oil. People get bored sometimes
May be he was looking to see if any one else had been oiling up some else in the car.
because it should be done regularly

i have seen you ask this question a few weeks ago

How much oil should you put in a car. Is there a such thing as too much.?

My car is a mitubushi eclispe (smaller car)How much oil should you put in a car. Is there a such thing as too much.?
4 to 4 1/2 quarts full. Over full oil may foam up and the engine will not get oil because of air. Too much oil will build up pressure and blow out through seals, IE; Pan Gasket, Head Gasket, Valve Cover Gasket, Timing Cover Gasket.

Changing and adding oil, if engine calls for 4Q. add 3 1/2, run engine for 15 seconds, check oil on dipstick %26amp; Then add to full line. (Two Lines on Dipstick, Bottom line is add, Top line is Full)How much oil should you put in a car. Is there a such thing as too much.?
Open the glove box, take out the owner's Manual and see what it says.
I believe the correct level is usually marked on the dipstick. Your manual will tell you how much oil to put in and where the filler cap is.
Well, off-hand I will guess that the Eclipse requires somewhere between 4.7 and 5 quarts of oil depending upon whether you also change the oil filter at the oil change (the empty filter requiring a little more oil to fill). Still, this is just a guess and you are best off looking in your manual or calling the dealer.

Now as to whether there can be too much oil, the answer is yes. Too much oil can increase oil pressure beyond the deigned limitations for seal, and can submerge turning parts in the lower end (crankshaft for example) creating too much resistance, foaming, etc.
how much depends on exact engine and such, parts store can tell u, too much, yes, you can over filling can cause hydro lock ( your motor might turn over, might not) as in over pressurizing, not a chance, your oil pump is only going to put out so much pressure , it does not gain pressure from just having more fluid in resevoir(oil pan)

My car is overheating a lot and my oil looks like it's getting a little antifreeze in it. without knowning with car you have,i would say your mechanic is right.if you keep on driving it,it will cost you lots more.600 bucks is cheap compared to 2500 bucks.

Make sure the brake lines haven't been tampered with.
    NOT AGAIN!!!

    Stop posting this useless crap!
why do you post this annoying question every day. get to the punch line already if its some sort of joke cause obviously we don't get it.
Why do you keep asking this strange question?
    Ask him?
BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT HUSBAND'S DO FOR THEIR WIVES!
cause thats his fetish let the man be...
i dont understand what the problem is??

Why did my dad check the oil, antifreeze and transmission fluid in my moms car friday when he came home?

She did not ask him to check it. 20 answers please. Why did my dad check the oil, antifreeze and transmission fluid in my moms car friday when he came home?
My answer is still the same from the last time you asked this question. Why did my dad check the oil, antifreeze and transmission fluid in my moms car friday when he came home?
Because that's the manly thing to do is make sure his woman's car is running smoothly for her safety.
Cause thats wat carin husbands do its a man thing us women never think of doin an oil check i dont think i wood no how ??? so god bless em thats wat they do simple as !!!!!
Don't you have some homework to do?

He wasn't really doing that, he was planting a bomb...and he is about to teach you how to drive.
    because he knows she didnt!
    To be nice.
Because he works for Valvoline and all they do is check oil, and your momma just happened to drive through his side of the service area...

This same question has been ask 400 times so i've resorted to giving ridiculous answers...:)

    LMAO at mrs_g2
Because he wanted to put a bomb into the car so that the next time she uses it she will be killed when the bomb goes off...if we're lucky you'll be in the car with her.
    Hi,

Because he loves her and wants to make sure the car runs well for her and doesn't break down when she drives it.

All good husbands do these type of things for their wives.
Maybe because he's a nice guy and your mom didn't want to do it herself. It should be checked once a month.

Is your mom complaining about this or just you?
He wanted to make sure that the car had all of those things that it needs to run.
So he wouldn't have to do it on Saturday.
If you are worried that your dad thinks your mom is having an affair, don't be. For one, it's none of your business, even though it would affect you directly. And two, if he was really thinking that, he would have checked the gas and maybe the oil, not everything else. Sounds like your dad is just a nice guy who cares about your mother's transportation safety. And it sounds like you need to relax and stop over thinking things. Que sera, sera.

  • Why does my dad check the oil and water in my moms car for her when her sisters husbands never check theirs?

Because your mother married better than her sisters did and if you're female make sure you do, too and if you're male aspire to grow up to be like your Dad.
Your dad is more concerned/diligent/knowledgeable than the others
because he knows that mom is not going to check it her self. and he cares about her. and is smart to check.
Your father is a true Gentleman. Not many of them left.
maybe your dads actually has a heart and your aunts husbands dont care.
    men are car freaks
He's a good man who's looking out for your mother.

    === UPDATE ===

    That is the very simplistic explanation. For more detail, google ';refining crude oil into gasoline';
any kind of crude oil go to oil refinery %26amp; the gasoline you use for your car is one of 8 prudacts at list comes frome the grude oil .

    - the deferent of the crude oil is the purity %26amp; percentage of the white prudact in it .

    - i hope that i reach your question .

    have a nice day
Using a process called fractional distillation.

Why does my dad check the oil and water in my moms car before they go on a long trip and before they come back?

It is just hers he does when they go in her car, he never checks his truck if they go in his. 20 answers please please. Why does my dad check the oil and water in my moms car before they go on a long trip and before they come back?
cz he doesn't want to be stuck with you in the middle of nowhere with a fried motor. Why does my dad check the oil and water in my moms car before they go on a long trip and before they come back?
Your dad probably knows the answer to your question better than anyone else knows. Perhaps you should ask your dad this question.

The car might be older and less reliable than the truck. Or perhaps your dad regularly checks his truck. And that's why he doesn't need to check it just before the trip. While your mom might not be checking her car regularly.

There are many possible reasons. And the simplest way for you to get the right answer is to ask your dad.
    Because it is Her.s and a way of showing his love ';a man thing';
Why do you always ask this question, ALWAYS, give me 20 answers to that!

What should i check when i see oil leaking from my car..?

Well i notice my oil are leaking.. but i dont know which.. and i've been driving it and nothing wrong with it.. and i check the oil once every month or so.. and the oil barely goes down.. I know its not gas cuz it will disolve in 3 sec.. but i wana know so i dont get rip off at the mechanic..What should i check when i see oil leaking from my car..?
i agree with caw but it's more likely to be power steering fluid buy an engine cleaner wash the motor then put a piece of paper or cardboard see where about its leaking then try to find it that way they wont tell you its a mayor repair good luckWhat should i check when i see oil leaking from my car..?
What is the frequency of the leak? What color is the oil? If it's black, it's engine oil. If it's gold, it could be brake fluid which is really dangerous, and if its red, then it's transmission fluid. Check the levels of your transmission fluid and brake fluid. You can ask someone at a parts store (like Autozone) to help you check these levels if you don't know. Oh, it could be power steering fluid too, which is also gold. Check that too.
Put some news paper and catch some of the fresh drip.

    (1) note the location where it is leaking from

    (2) note the color of the fluid.

And come back here and ask again.

    Good Luck...

I need to find out how much oil to put in my 95 Dodge Spirit car?

I've been on the internet for ever and can't get the info I need. Any body know of any web sites to get this specific info. Thanks.I need to find out how much oil to put in my 95 Dodge Spirit car?
Baldie said what I was going to tell you.

Start out with 4 1/2 quarts.

Start acar and run for a ew minutes while you are checking for leaks. Shut acar off and wait a couple of minutes, then check oil.

You shpuld be right on.I need to find out how much oil to put in my 95 Dodge Spirit car?
4-1/2 quarts for the 2.5L 4 cylinder and the same for the 3.0L V-6
if you change the filter, you will need at least 4 and a half to 5 qts.
until it hits the full mark on the dipstick? your owners manual should tell you
if you have the owners manual look in there, if you don't have it call the dodge dealership and ask to talk to the service manager or parts man and ask them, more than likely 4 qts. without changing the oil filter and 4.5 to 5 qts. if changing the filter.

My car is leaking oil it looks like it's leaking from the oil pan?

it's been leaking about a month %26amp; i checked the dipstick this morning %26amp; it's still a little bit over the full lineMy car is leaking oil it looks like it's leaking from the oil pan?
Are you positive it's oil? Possibly transmission fluid?

If it is oil, if it's a drop here or two then you wouldn't see a dramatic decrease in oil on the dipstick. My car is leaking oil it looks like it's leaking from the oil pan?
always check the oil once the car has gotton warm and shut the engine off, doing it when its cold will give a false reading. if its coming fro mthe oil pan, its one of 2, the pan gasket or the drain plug (bolt). if its a simple drop here n there, id just wait til the next oil change to have it done. the pan gasket is about 10-12 and for the plug another 1.50.
dont be fooled .if theres any leaking going on above the pan gasket, its going to run down right to the pan and youl think its the pan,so take a closer look at it and make sure its nothing else.
It sounds like you overfilled it with oil. The only way to fix a bad oilpan gasket is to replace it. They can be a little tricky, get a repair manual.

  • I took my Honda for an oil change yesterday, now my car won't start?

I have very little gas (the lights not on yet though) could that be it? I know very little about cars, is there anything I can look for and fix myself, or will I have to have it towed back to the mechanics?I took my Honda for an oil change yesterday, now my car won't start?
It could be a loose battery connection. Easy way to tell Turn on the interior light. Turn the key . If light dims severely or completely out then it's either a dead battery or loose connection.

If on the other hand it stays bright.Check the oil and see if there is any left in the motor. If non engine is fried!I took my Honda for an oil change yesterday, now my car won't start?
Put a few gallons of gas in it just to make sure the gauge is reading correctly. If that doesn't work call the shop that did the work. Or you can look under the hood for any bumped or loose connections. Some MIGHT have been tugged on during the oil change. Also, the two might not be connected. It might be just an extreme coincidence.
    Could be:

    1) Dead battery.

    2) Loose battery connection.

    3) Faulty starter.

    4) Bad ground.

    5) Faulty neutral safety switch.

    6) Bad key switch.

    7) Bad fuel pump.

    8) Plugged fuel filter.

    9) Blow fuse.

    10) Blown head gasket.

    11) Fouled spark plugs.

    12) Broken timing belt.

    13)......

There COULD be hundreds of possibilities.

Could you be a little more specific as far as what it is or isn't doing?
What happens when you try to start it? Does it turn the engine over? Make a clicking noise?

Some information about what it does might help.
It's probably out of gas. Get a can and put a bit into it.

If it still won't start, they may have forgotten to put the oil plug back into it, but I doubt it.

I changed the oil in my car and now it makes a clattering noise when the accelerator is not pushed, why?

it happens mainly when the car is cold, and when i dont press the accelerator it clatters, not quite sure what the noise could be, any ideas?I changed the oil in my car and now it makes a clattering noise when the accelerator is not pushed, why?
3.5 litres does not sound like enough oil for any car engine. My bike takes 4.8 litres and one of the cars nearer 6.

It is 14 years old nearly so time to get rid of it anyway - they pay people to scrap much younger cars than that.I changed the oil in my car and now it makes a clattering noise when the accelerator is not pushed, why?
Are you sure you filled the crankcase? Clattering could be pistons running without oil. If that's the case, that engine will blow sooner rather than later. Pull the dipstick, make sure it shows oil on it, and an adequate amount.
probably the wrong oil, most instruction manuals will tell you what kind of oil to use--I would refer to the manual that came with the car, then drain the system and refill it with the right kind of oil
Wrong oil! Make model and year , as well as mileage would help
Did you use the right amount of oil?
';Should have been full'; isn't good enough, mate. Use the dipstick.
doesn't sound good are you sure the oil didn't leak out?

An older model car leaking oil?

I have a older model car that is leaking oil, not burning oil. I can't figure out just exactly where it is leaking. Is there any thing say like someting lucas or some other brand makes to slow the leak way down or possibly stop the leak?An older model car leaking oil?
The most likely place is the rocker cover(s).

When was the last time it/they had a new gasket. If you are having trouble answering the question then it may be the first place to look

    - - -An older model car leaking oil?
Leaks really need to be fixed... usually a leaking gasket or a bad seal, for slowing down the leak, it is possible, but dont count on it.... repairing it is the best bet.
None of those things really work. If you can trace the leak to a specific component, it might be relatively inexpensive to have the leaky seal replaced.
If, after cleaning an inspecting, you still can't find the leak, you can buy indicator dye that is added to the oil and checked with a black light. It'll become obvious pretty quickly where it's coming from. On an older car, it could easily be from more than one place.

Engines can leak from SO many places that there's no way to know if any of those products might work at all -- depends upon the nature of the leak. For example, if you do such a poor job of cranking down your valve cover gaskets that you deform them, nothing made will fill the gap.

Cost to resolve is also all over the map. A simple tightening of a couple of bolts, an inexpensive gasket, or pulling the engine to replace the front main seal. No way to tell until you find it (them).
These things dont work all they do is clog up your engine and willl cost you more to fix it try the simple things first change your oil replace the oil filter the seal on the filter my be bad check valve cover gasket the check the oil pan gasket all of these are a cheap fix if you do it yourself hope this helps.
You could try a stop leak like Lucas or others. But all they do is soften the seal so that it does its job again. The bad side is that they are only a bandaid. The best bet would be to have the leaking component fixed properly. But if you are in a financial pinch, then a stop leak will work temporariliy (if the leak is minor). Good luck!
There are numerous ';snake oils'; on the market that will stop oil leaks, but usually this is a temporary fix at best. In my opinion the only way to stop oil leaks is to identfy where the leak is and repair it properly. A good engine cleaning with an engine degreaser will help you find the leak. You can't find a leak easily on a dirty, greasy engine. The ';snake oils'; are ok if you intend to trade the car in.
there are all sorts of stop leak stuff but the best thing is to take it to the shop and have them find it. they can lift the car up, clean the underneath and determine where the leak is coming from. probably just an old gaskit. no more than 20 bucks to have done.
OK I see your other answering buddy didn't really say anything but a bunch of mumbo jumbo. Here is one of the fool proof methods of finding the leak. Take the car down to the car wash and degrease the engine compartment. Including the whole engine, Paying close attention to cleaning around the valve covers, oil pan sides and front and back and under the car between the motor and transmission. And not to forget around the timing cover.

Once you have cleaned all these areas well take the car home and put large sheets of card board under the vehicle and leave it for a while and if you get it up on ramps you can follow your leak from the bottom to the top.

Key areas , timing cover, valve cover, oil sending unit, rear engine seal, oil pan gasket. Maybe head gasket.

That's about as simple as you can get it.

Older car oil leak adding a quart a week should you still change it even after added clean quart a week?

Not to be rude but your spilling oil out on the ground not cool! ... your also mixing clean oil to dirty oil so the oil is never clean. Have an oil leak diag done on it. Most times its a valve cover or oil pan gasket if your lucky at least have it looked at and try to have it fixed.Older car oil leak adding a quart a week should you still change it even after added clean quart a week?
Your oil never gets a chance to get dirty if it's getting a new quart every week, my friend. Your PEP BOYS tech is only partially correct. Most of them don't know squat. Report Abuse
Older car oil leak adding a quart a week should you still change it even after added clean quart a week?
NO. if you're using quality oil, just change the filter once in a while.

A new quart every week is the same as new oil forever, especially if you drive mostly freeway. If your trips are short, just keep an eye on the color of the oil. If it starts getting close to black, go ahead and change it.

The contaminants cannot build up that quickly.
Yes change the filter and oil put a thinker oil and a additive the particles still will get clogged in your engine sitting in the bottom of the pan make it last as long as you can
GET IT FIXED! You're adding a quart a week of dirty oil to the ground water, water ways and eventually to our estuaries and coastal waters.
Quit polluting our environment! Get your car fixed!
Yes you should still change the oil and filter when the service is due. Just because it leaks oil excessively, doesn't mean the sediment that settles in the bottom of the pan leaks out, or the filters filtering capabilities are increased.

If a gallon of gas mixed with oil was accidentally put into a car,can it damage the engine?

if so....how can i get out.engine has not been turned on since. If a gallon of gas mixed with oil was accidentally put into a car,can it damage the engine?
no it wont but it will smoke like hell until that gas is burnt out.If a gallon of gas mixed with oil was accidentally put into a car,can it damage the engine?
it won't hurt a thing, might make it smoke for awhile, but will do no damage.
Probably wont do any harm other than make the engine run a little roughand smoke a bit temporarily. I suggest adding more gas to 'dilute' and thereby minimize the presence of the oil and once that gas is burned it should be fine. I would also advise adding a gas treatment to your next few fill-ups such as STP or something similar like an injector cleaner to prevent gumming up the inner workings of your engine.

Filler up! You should be good to go.
Don't worry about it , it will smoke a little if you had no gas in the car. Just get more gas soon to dilute the oil.
Fill the tank up and dilute the gas/oil mix. You might smoke a bit put some age on the catalytic converter, but if you don't put oil in the fuel tank on a regular basis, the car should survive.
the two dudes are right. Most importantly how much did you put in? if it was 1-2 gallons just put more plain gasoline on top of it. You might shorten the life of your catalytic converter but it nothing to worry about. honest it won't harm a thing.
No it'll smoke alot, just fill it with fresh gas,i'v done it and knew it was mixed but i had to get more beer,so don't woory about it.

When should trasmission oil in a car be changed?

2001 Pontaic Grand Prix GT over 118,000 miles. When should trasmission oil in a car be changed?
Transmission fluid is not pink, its red, A LIGHT RED, if its a dark red, well the fluid is pretty much worn out. It should be done around 60 to 75 thousand miles, some manufacturers may be different though on different cars, or I'd say every two years, once a year is a little too much if its not driven much, and of course trans fluid never sees combustion byproducts, which is why it lasts longer. I would have it professionally flushed, wouldn't have jiffy lube to do it though, and have a pan dropped and the trans filter changed. Use either dexron/mercon III, or dexron/mercon III with the ';h'; spec, or dexron IVWhen should trasmission oil in a car be changed?
If you haven't done it already, now would be a good time. Every 50,000 miles as a rule.
i do it now if it not been done.
Besides the 500,000 miles as mentioned, if your trans oil isn't pink anymore, you know it needs a change.
there is no transmission oil its fluid.and u should probably change it 1 time a year.
The trans fluid should have been changed at about 65K. Recommend taking it to a Trans shop or the dealer for a fluid changed and FLUSH.

  • Can I use different motor oil different grade other than the one suggested by the car manufacturer?

i own a 1000cc compact car..... the car manufacturer suggested castrol 10W-30 grade motor oil. on the next servicing, i plan to use better brand which is Shell Helix Ultra Fully Synthetic grade 5W-40. Will my car engine get damaged if i use different grade other than the suggested one? Thanks. Can I use different motor oil different grade other than the one suggested by the car manufacturer?
    5W30 versus 10W30

Virtually all new passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. use either 5W30 or 10W30 oil. The difference between the two is that the 5W30 flows better when cold, so if you live in a cold climate or operate your vehicle in a cold climate during the winter months, you should use 5W30 if it is the preferred oil for your vehicle. If you live in a sub-tropical climate and don't operate your vehicle in cold climates, then 10W30 is acceptable as long as the manufacturer specifies that it is permissible to use it.

Is there a disadvantage to using an oil that flows better when cold, i.e. 5W30 versus 10W30?

Sometimes, but usually not. The crux of the issue is this: the bigger the difference between the cold oil viscosity and the hot oil viscosity, the more the volume of viscosity modifiers and the less the volume of base stock. If you are good about following the manufacturer's recommended oil change interval then stick with the 5W30 if that is the preferred oil for your vehicle, even if 10W30 is acceptable in warmer climates. Older cars may specify 10W30 only. This is because they need a little more viscosity when cold to keep a protective film on the cylinder walls. There have been instances where the larger amount of viscosity modifiers that are present in 5W30 have broken down due to excessive heat and have left carbon deposits on the valves, but this is extremely rare. The proper fix would be to reduce the excessive heat, but the workaround was to use an oil with less viscosity modifiers.

Synthetic oil was originally developed for high performance racing engines. Mobil tried to popularize synthetic oil for passenger vehicles back in the early 1970's. At the time, Mobil was promoting 20K or 25K oil changes with synthetic, but they soon backed down from this. Synthetic oil is a good choice if you have a vehicle with a high performance engine (in fact synthetic is required for many of these engines). It is also a good choice if your vehicle is operated in extremely cold climates. It has higher resistance to breakdown caused by heat and it flows better in extreme cold. Unfortunately for the synthetic oil industry there is virtually no advantage to using synthetic oil in a non-high performance engine that is operated in moderate climates. You probably could go a bit longer between oil changes with a synthetic, i.e. following the normal service schedule even if you fall into the severe service category, but I wouldn't advise this. In short, synthetic may give you the peace of mind of knowing that you are using an oil that is far better than necessary for your vehicle, but it won't reduce wear or extend the life of the engine. The mistake some people make it to wrongly extrapolate these benefits onto normal engines operated in mild climates, with the ultimate lack of any knowledge being manifested with statements such as ';synthetics provide 'Peace of Mind,' or 'Cheap Insurance,''; or other such nonsense.

Never use a non-API certified synthetic oil (there are many of these on the market). The problem with the non-API certified synthetics is that they contain too much phosphorus (in the form of the additive ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl Dithiophosphates)). The API has limited the amount of phosphorus because phosphorus shortens the life of the catalytic converter. These oils are fine for snowmobiles, motorcycles, and older cars that don't have a catalytic converter, and the extra ZDDP does provide additional wear protection. Unfortunately, the marketers of some the non-certified oils do not explicitly and honestly state the reason for the lack of API certification. You can check the status of API certification on the API web site. Be certain to go not just by the manufacturer name but by the actual product as well. This is because a manufacturer will sometimes have both certified and non-certified products. Suffice it to say that Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Castrol, %26amp; Havoline all make synthetic oils that are API certified and that can be purchased at auto parts stores and other retail outlets. Amsoil has one product line, XL-7500 that is API certified, but it's other lines contain too much ZDDP to be certified and should not be used in vehicles with catalytic converters. Can I use different motor oil different grade other than the one suggested by the car manufacturer?
Nope, no damage. I don't see any advantage in synthetic at all. I buy any oil company oil on sale: Sunoco, Mobil, Shell, anything but stay away from independent or store brands or junk like STP or Cam 3 or the like.
I myself run Valvoline's 20-50 in my v8's when I'm in the southern states like Florida, but up here in the cold I run 10w-30 in the winter and 15-40 for the warmer months. I have found no difference in wear between the oils. As far as synthetic I wouldn't recommend it unless the vehicle recommends it or has low miles (10000) then you shouldn't have any issue's...
If you switch to synthetic there's a good chance your engine will start to leak / seep oil.

HELP i think my car has a oil leak what am i looking at in repair cost?

i just got my oil changed within the last 3 weeks ago and i think its all leaked out!!! i checked my dip stick and i dont see any oil on it!! im just worried about repair cost since ive forked alot of money allready on this car, i drive a 93 honda accord!!!!HELP i think my car has a oil leak what am i looking at in repair cost?
you might have to tighten the drain plug on your drain pan if this has not happend b4HELP i think my car has a oil leak what am i looking at in repair cost?
First of all dont start or drive the car with no oil - that will be a big repair bill. Fill the car with oil again and see where it is leeking.
take off the oil filter and see if the old oil filter o-ring is on there if thare is 2 that the bad put a new filter on and make shore there is not the o-rind on the block if so pull it off the you leak plus put the rigth oil in
Depends on where the leak is from. Sometimes its the gasket from the oil-pan--that'll take between $45-$75. Anywhere else it might be a bigger deal but hope it something is simple. But remember, oil is the lifeblood of your engine, if you don't fix it, you'll end up destroying the engine permanently very-very quickly.

How often should i change the oil in my car?

I drive a 98 mustang and i drive about 80 miles a dayHow often should i change the oil in my car?
The oil in your engine is the life blood of your car. Depending on the type of oil you run in your engine will depend on how often you should change it. If you use conventional oil (non synthetic) then you should change the oil and oil filter every 3000 miles. Driving 80 miles a day regularly, I would switch to a synthetic oil. Synthetic oil will last longer than conventional oil. Synthetic oil is just better. You can stretch your oil changes out to every 5000 to 6000 miles. Here are some little known facts about it. If you are running conventional oil and wish to switch to synthetic. You must perform a engine flush. Its not hard and will save you much grief in the future. All you do is purchase a bottle of engine flush from your local auto parts store. I have used the Prestone brand and have been very satisfied with it. You add the flush to the engine oil BEFORE you start the oil change. You then run the engine for about 10 to 15 minutes. Next you proceed with the oil change as usual. Also, make sure you purchase an oil filter that is rated for synthetic oil. Few people know that what the filter element is made of, makes all the difference in the world when it comes to how effective the filter will clean your oil. If you use a filter who's filtering element is made of natural fibers, with synthetic oil... the filter will not clean the oil very well at all. It is best to use a filter with a synthetic element with synthetic oil. My prefarance is Wix. Wix filters also have what is called a check valve in every filter they make. This valve will close when you turn off your engine, thus holding a filters full amount of oil for when you start the engine again. That small amount of oil is released when you start your engine and is readily available to lubricate your engine upon start up. Engines using filters not equipped with a check valve, do not get this vital shot of oil at start up and suffer wear to vital internal parts. Your Mustang will take a Wix filter # 51516. I know because I drove one myself for years. Plus if you have over 100,000 miles on your Pony car then its time to up grade to Synthetic oil anyway. I hope this helps. How often should i change the oil in my car?
every 3000 miles i do mine at 2500 oil is cheap compared to the engine also change your filter at the same time tranny fluid every 50k radiator every other yr also check your rearend every time you change tour tranny fluid
    Every 3000 miles
Rule of thumb, every 3K miles. But check the recommended schedule in your owners manual.
Every 3000 miles checking periodically in between to make sure the level is right.
Every 3 months or every 3,000 miles =]
change the oil and filter bout every 6 months dont listen to any 1 else i work for ford
What does your owners manual say about the subject?

Is Mobil Extended Performance the best oil for your car?

Oil is personal preference. I use Full synth Mobil 1 in all my cars. The only reason i dont use castrol is because its too clear, and hard to see on the dipstick. I know people that buy $10/ qt Royal purple, but i dont see the point.

    I like Mobil 1, so i say sure...lol

its the pulley and the bearings burned out in it so you have to get the pulley replaced
which pulley is not turning ?
You need to replace the part that isn't turning. And for gods sake don't run the engine like that.

  • Is a 7qts good for a 6qts engine? and how many WAL-MART car service techs needed to change oil incorrectly?

A few days ago (9/5/07) I went into the Wal-mart in Albuquerque,NM for a oil change. Well while they were doing a oil change I notice the service tech putting in 7qts of oil in my 95'Jeep Grande Cheeoke(Straght 6/ 4.0L). I went in the tec bay and asked him what the hell he was doing? He claimed that the dip stick showed that it still needed another qt. Well after aruging with the them over twenty min to take out one qt.I finnly had enought and paid for a oil change with extra oil. Well to make along story shorter. I still have seven qts of oil in my six qt engine. I have driven about four hundred mile and have to drive another 50 to the dealer to get another oil change. Besides another oil change what should I ask the the dealer to do. Should the dealer do to a compression test or what.? On the second question I now know the answer. ONE IS TO MANY!!! DONT LET WAL-MART CLOSE TO YOUR F****** CAR, TRUCK, OR SUV.Is a 7qts good for a 6qts engine? and how many WAL-MART car service techs needed to change oil incorrectly?
It won't hurt it. The worst thing that can happen by having too much oil in the engine is if the level is up high enough for the crankshaft to touch it. This can cause the motor to run out of balance and sling excessive oil in the crankcase which you would more than likely be able to see in the form of smoke since the wiper ring on the piston usually cannot keep this amount of oil from entering the combustion chamber. In other words, if you haven't seen smoke coming out of the tailpipe, don't sweat it.Is a 7qts good for a 6qts engine? and how many WAL-MART car service techs needed to change oil incorrectly?
    just drain out 1 quart
    6 quarts

    (w/filter, all engines)

NOT 7. And of course you knew that. So the question is, why did you even drive it out of the store overfilled, let alone 400 miles?

Assuming they used decent oil, you don't need another change, you just needed it brought down to the proper level.

So, what damage could you have done? Overfilling causes the oil to foam which can put the engine at risk. To quote from one of my service bulletins:

Over filling the oil can be a slight problem or a big problem depending on how much it was overfilled. The problem with overfilling comes when the crankshaft hits the oil. The crankshaft turns the oil into a foam, kind of like the head on a beer, and that is what circulates through the oil system. Since this foam is mostly air, the moving parts of the engine don't get sufficient lubrication and are damaged.

So the real question is, did the oil get high enough that the crank was slapping it and foaming it? If you didn't notice any smoke from the exhaust or over heating, you may have dodged the bullet this time.

Tell the dealer what happened, and let them check it out. Unfortunately you may not be able to go back on the Wal-Mart oil change folks for damages because you didn't do things you should have done to lessen damage. In other words, YOU are the one who drove it 400 miles knowing it was overfilled.
The biggest problem with overfilling your oil capacity is that many times the bottom of the crankshaft will ';splash'; in the extra iol causing it to become foamy. The oil pump is at that point pumping oil bubbles that are mostly air and air doesn't lubricate very well. It can cause your engine a sever amount of wear in a very short time. Look at your dipstick after the engine has run for a minute or two and see if the oil is foamy or if it looks like a smooth oil layer. If it's foamy Do not run the engine and get the extra quart of oil removed. If it's a smooth layer of oil just drive it to the dealer and get the extra oil removed.
    Well, here goes nothing...

Most engines will accomodate an extra 1/2 quart over the capacity listed in the owners manual.

This is because there is always a 1/2 quart in circulation while the motor is running.

One extra quart will not likely do anything. If the crankshaft was splashing in the oil you would notice power loss and the oil would be full of tiny bubbles when you pull the dipstick.

I had a customer come in after leaving a oil quick lube place and the technician was stumped until he told me that oil came out of the breather tube when he pulled it off to look in the valve cover. He kept pulling the dipstick and wiping it and I told him the engine is not just full, it's full-full to the top with oil. They had forgotten to drain the oil pan before dumping another five quarts in it.

Another guy came in where the oil change guy had spilled oil on the engien and then took it to the do it youself wash to clena the engine and flooded the electrical system. He cranked it for several minutes telling the customer that it wil start, they always start. All of a sudden ';BOOM!'; the whole exhaust system exploded when it finally threw a spark and the flash ignited all of the unburned fuel in the exhaust.

You got off easy. Thank your lucky stars. The worst that can happen in a ';really full'; engine is that you can float a bearing on the cranshaft or connecting rod.

    One quart is no biggy.

    Good Luck!
just drain out a quart and let it go. no compression test or anything needed. just check dipstick (the one in the engine, not the wallywrld tech) level and drain accordingly.

keep in mind u r dealing with minimum wage employees here, they only do what wage they get. yes they r cheaper, but sometimes at what cost later? i haven't bought anything at wallywrld in 5yrs and i haven't died yet.
If the stick is not past the full line its fine,if it's past it drop some out,i never have anyone change my oil i do it my self becuse of this kind of stuff.

What happens when the i fill my car engine with oil above the max. mark (above by 5 mm)?

5 mm over the full mark most likely won't hurt anything...on my car that would be about four ounces of oil. HOWEVER...pay attention to your car when you're driving it for a few days, especially for a knocking/tapping sound from the engine, of smoke coming from the tailpipe. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, stop the engine as soon as possible and drain a little oil out of the crankcase just to be on the safe side.

The danger of adding too much oil is that if the rotating engine parts are able to dip below the surface of the oil supply, the oil can be whipped up into a froth...the extra air in the oil increases its volume, and it ends up getting pulled into the cylinders and burned off. Also, foamy oil doesn't lubricate the moving parts as well. What happens when the i fill my car engine with oil above the max. mark (above by 5 mm)?
it has the mark for a reason do you think the engine manufacturers just put the mark where they think it should go..

but 5 mm can be allot in some cars and no big deal in others

the excess oil can cause big problems in some diesels

i doubt it will cause any major problemsWhat happens when the i fill my car engine with oil above the max. mark (above by 5 mm)?
It must be reading very close to the full mark after the car has been parked overnight so that all the oil drains into the crank case. Therefore, there's no problem, but read about what a 1 quart overfill might do to an engine below.

    http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible鈥?/a>
while everyone says nothing happens, I didn't notice anyone signing their name as engineer or whatever. Beware of high oil in your engine. You have the chance of pushing out seals.
nothing happens. A little aboove the line is notheing to concern yourself about.

Why does the the OIL LAMP go on my car?

My honda 92 accord lampwwent on today and when I pulled over to check it under the hood and the metal hanger looking thing said it was empty on oil. but How if I jus did the oil and filter change about 513 miles ago. The concete at my house is not showing evidence of oil leakage. I put about 4 !/2 bottles of oil so it cant be that i didnt put enough oil on the change . why is it that there is no oil in the pan? Im really confused? Why does the the OIL LAMP go on my car?
it may have a bad sending unit on it,,that will make the light go on,,and there wont be nothing wrong with it,,id check the oil,and make sure its OK,,and if it is,, you probably have a sending unit going bad on it,,i,own a repair shop,,and do this for a living,,good luck i hope this help,s.,,PS if your loosing that much oil there is a problem somewhere and you need to find it,and real soon i have never seen one loose that much oil before,in that less of miles.its either smoking or leaking somewhere it has to be,,good luck. Why does the the OIL LAMP go on my car?
when the oil light comes on it dosent mean you need oil it means their is a problem with the oil pump
You are either leaking the oil or blowing it into the coolant. If you are burning that much oil in that short of a period of time, you are headed for an engine failure really fast.
first you do not know enough about cars to change your oil.

most oil filters if not put on properly will leak a lot of oil in a short time.

the dip stick tells the tail that the oil is gone some ware.
When you topped off the oil did the lamp go out or stay lit? If you just changed the oil You might have checked the oil before you started the car, and the oil filter was empty and that's where your oil went when you started it. How many quarts did it take when you added oil the second time?.Check your owners manual for maintenance and capacities. You may have just under filled it.
Not only are you confused, you are mechanically retarded. Go to a mechanic. Your car's life depends on it!
You should check the radiator and see if there is oil in there. You could have a cracked head, or a oil seal is out.
When the oil reaches below specified sensor level, in the reservoir the light turns ON. Based on the explanation, car is burning lot of oil during the driving which results in oil loss. You should not add more oil in the engine than the level specified on the dipstick. Check the oil level in morning when is car is resting [engine turned off] on a level surface. Make sure that the dipstick is going down to the correct base. Use correct viscosity of oil recommended by the manufacturer with SAE logo on the oil container to minimize oil consumption and preserve engine life.

You need a tune up for the car to correct excessive oil consumption.
    dude you got problems
You are probably burning oil if you put oil in the car check the dipstick. If after a time the oil goes low u will need a new engine

If you still have enough oil in your engine and the light comes on it means u have a bad oil sending unit
Whoa! It sounds like your engine is losing a huge amount of oil somehow.

If there's no oil stain on your driveway, it's probably leaking out somewhere, maybe thru a blown gasket or seal.

Or the oil could be burning. Does your car blow a lot of bluish smoke out the tailpipe?

In any case, I think you have a serious problem.

I recommend that you 1st top off the oil, if you haven't already, then get it to a mechanic ASAP. I just hope it's not too late to save the engine.
did you reset your maintenance light? if you didnt do that your light will come on.

How can one convert a car from running on diesel to running on cooking oil?

I actually have performed various conversions. The biggest factor for complication and expense is which engine and fuel system you have, also how automated you want the system to be.

The basics are usually a two tank system with a heated veg part. How can one convert a car from running on diesel to running on cooking oil?
if your car is worth little money then carry on? it will cost alot to repair it if used over a long period of time as it will if biodiesel is used also, seems a cheap option but its not in the longrunHow can one convert a car from running on diesel to running on cooking oil?
you dont convert the car, you actually convert the cooking oil to run a diesel engine, a few companies in the UK DO this for you. the cooking oil cannot be put in the tank without treatment first
Dont bother love run on red and if you dont drive a tranny or a taxi you wont get a pull.Cos if they find you running on anything they cant tax your car is going to be history anyway so take the easy route
Use a 50-50 mixture of oil to diesel

My car was 2 quarts low in oil did i damage my engine?

okay my car is throwing water out of the engine and my father said its 2 quarts low in oil what does this mean?My car was 2 quarts low in oil did i damage my engine?
Your question is a little murky. Are you losing coolant, or do you have some literal water drooling out the tailpipe as the car warms up?

A little condensation dripping from the tailpipe isn't at all unusual. Most people don't even realize it because you don't exactly have a mirror that allows you to see the tailpipe as you're driving those first few miles.

If you're losing coolant, you have issues. If your car overheated recently, you may have a warped head or a popped head gasket (usually both). The shorter your head, the less likely this is to occur. My car is a ';straight 6';, meaning my head is 6 cylinders long. This type of head is highly subject to this type of overheating damage. Most cars today have either a 4 banger or a V6. A 4 will pop a gasket from time to time, especially if it's getting older and the head bolts weren't re-torqued as all head bolts need to be 10 or 20,000 miles after you bought it new. If you have a V6, the liklihood of a warped head causing a popped gasket is remote, but I'm sure it has happened.

As to your primary question, there's not much chance you did damage by being 2 quarts low. The wet-sump in your engine is designed so that the oil pickup bell hangs about a half inch from the bottom of the pan. That translates to about a half a quart being all that's needed for oil to flow to the oil pump.

If your car holds 5 quarts of oil, 4 and a half of those are in the sump, and a half a quart in the filter. You would have had to be 4 quarts low for damage to occur.

In my younger days I can remember checking the oil and it being so low that it didn't even show on the dipstick (With no damage occurring).

I'm a little smarter now. (thank God)

I'm confident you're ok.My car was 2 quarts low in oil did i damage my engine?
it's either leaking (check for spots on the ground where you park) or it burns it.

if the engine is not making any funny noises, there probably is no damage, yet!

i suggest keeping a few quarts in the trunk and checking it when you fill it up with gas.

leaks are GENERALLY easy to fix. if it's burning it, there are additives you can put in there to slow consumption.

    hope this helps.

EDIT oh yeah, the water thing could contribute to burning. again leaks are GENERALLY easy to fix.
i think it is fine as long as there was oil in it! just check it every couple of months to make sure he stays hydrated!LOL
throwing atre out that could be head gasket or water pump or water pump gasket

if you are driving WITHOUT ANY oil you could throw a rod or a rod bearing and that will cause catostrophic engine failure
it means you could have blown a head gasket or done some internal damage to it,right now at this point id have a shop check it over real good to see if it did hurt anything on it,you wont know for sure until its been checked over real good, that's the only way to find out,i hope you didn't hurt it,next time keep a check on things, and this can be prevented, good luck.
It probably means that it is in it's last leg if it doesn't get some TLC and regular maintenance.
';...throwing water out of the engine...'; I'm not sure what you mean by this. However just because it was two quarts low doesn't mean that damaged the engine. Just make sure you check it regularrly from now on and add when a quart low.
Yes, it may be all right THIS TIME. But you seriously need to get knowledgeable about taking care of your car. Obviously, just because it runs all right now doesn't mean it will always be all right, as you have found out. Checking the oil when you get gas is all right usually, but right now you need to check it every morning or evening (let it sit for at least 5 minutes before you check it) to make sure at what rate you are losing it.

But what do you mean, it's ';throwing water out?'; Steaming and blowing water out? Just losing a little water? It may mean the difference between a damaged engine or not. You may just have a broken fan belt--aggravating but not expensive providing you don't keep driving the car. but have it fixed. If you want, add more information to your question and I will get back to it, or you may email me by clicking on my icon. I will be here and there this afternoon but will be back before this eve. Best regards, Mike
you didnt damage it just keep a check on it to see where the water and the oil is going .... just dont let it run out... i would check it out at least every other day or whenever you refuel.
if your car is trowing water is probably a broken hose or the radiator, cars are meant to burn oil specially the way you drive and how often you check the oil, that is why you have to make a oil change every 3,000 miles because oil burns fill up the 2quarts and then like in two days check the oil again to make sure there is no oil leaking.Remember when you check the oil or the water the car does not have to be with the engine running do it early in the morning before you start the car,and if you open the radiator cap when the engine is hot it will throw water cause of the pressure, you havent mess up the engine but if is a car with high miles check your oil once a week and if it needs put more right away.

stop asking this dumb question you troll. Why did my dad check the oil and water in my moms car when she came home from church?
You can destroy an engine in minutes by driving it low of oil and water, this is a maintenance procedure that should be performed regularly. The engine can loose oil from several places as well as water, as they get older they can even mix in the engine if there is a major problem. Watch him and learn how to take care of your car.
Wow.. not sure.. there's nothing in that routine check that would implicate her in some scandal so I am not sure why he is doing it either unless he is also checking mileage and seeing how much she is driving and if the miles add up or not. Beyond that just checking the engine would tell him nothing.
I'm honestly not seeing why you are so confused by this or why you care so much. It is just something you have to do every so often and your dad must have decided today was that day. Maybe she doesn't know how to do it so that is why he does it and not her.
My wife has her own car too. She drives it all week, %26amp; on the weekends I have to check the oil %26amp; fluid levels, %26amp; even put gas in the tank. Why?

I'm just curious as to why you keep asking the same question, are you doing research or something?

What happens if you don't get an oil change for your car?

First of all, the oil will get dirty. That dirt will be carried in the oil to the smallest orifices in the engine, where it will lodge and start a clog. It will also get into the bearing surfaces and cause minute scratches which cause premature wear on those surfaces. If enough dirt gets on those surfaces, the engine will seize and fail. If you are lucky and that doesn't happen you will get molecular degradation from heat, and the oil with start to lose it's lubricity, and the same failure will occur. Either way, starving the engine of oil, burnt oil, or dirty oil, it all means catastophic engine failure, usually at highway speeds. Rule of thumb, change oil each 3000 miles and filter 6000, but I do both at 2500. Learned the hard way. Oil is cheaper than engines. What happens if you don't get an oil change for your car?
Oil needs to be changed for these reasons:

    1. buildup of corrosive byproducts of combustion which could erode metal parts left to soak in it (pull a dipstick of any car that has seen long storage and note how much erosion has occurred on the portion of the dipstick that was below the surface of the oil - you may be amazed!), and

    2. breakdown of additives and lubricity due to heat and mechanical stress on the oil, and

    3. accumulation of dirt in the oil from debris caused by blow-by (carbonized oil and fuel), and

    4. contamination cause by fuel or coolant leakage. Only the last reason is operative for a car which is not being used. This will occur only if there is a problem with the carburetor leaking fuel, or the cooling system gaskets or porosity.

If neither of these problems are suspect on a car, I see no reason to change the oil on a car which is not being driven. I know of no deterioration that occurs to oil just from sitting, at least not with modern oil. Therefore, with my older cars, which do not have the very best of oil filtration system (Packard never did adopt a full flow filter), I think the oil should be changed every 1500 miles of actual driving, and I put no time limit on that. On the newer cars, with modern spin-on full flow oil filters, I'm sure it does no damage to run at least 3000 Miles between changes. Always change the oil before storing the car, though, if it has been driven more than a few hundred miles since the last change, to avoid the corrosion problem. What happens if you don't get an oil change for your car?
The engine will eventually lock up and you'll get to go shopping for a new car.
oil is due to be changed often to protect the engine

engine oil has 3 properties here are the main 2

the first one is obviosly to lubricate any moving parts inside the engine it goes through holes so small they are invisible to the naked eye (mainly in the crankshaft) and if the oil is too dirty these holes clog up and stops the librication reaching certain parts of the engine - as time goes on the oil gets dirtier and starts clogging bigger holes - and if it gets bad enough the engine will seize due to too much friction creating too much heat and making the metal expand - all because the oil didnt reach certain parts

the other thing about oil is it helps cool the engine down by reducing friction - friction causes heat and if an engine overheats too much it will seize and not go without 拢/$1000s being spent on new parts for it

    what would you rather pay

    拢/$30 - 拢/$40 for an oil change

or thousands for major engine repairs

think of it this way - theres an oil filter and a service interval on every car for a reason

the other property is for keeping the inside of the engine clean
On larger engines, in the past, it wasn't as critical. The dirty oil can clog the ports in the oil gallery and ruin your engine. But, changing the oil and when depends partly upon whether it's city or highway driving.

    What type of Car oil?

Does it matter what oil you put into your car?Im not talking leaded unleaded fuel im talking about the oil under the bonnet. I have a citeon AX.What type of Car oil?
Use mfr recommended grade oil. check your owners manualWhat type of Car oil?
Stick to the viscosity recommended by the factory. This is VERY important.

If you were to keep very constant maintenance schedule, regular (cheap) oil would do. But if you miss or are late with oil changes frequently, or just want the max protections (harsh driving condition) stick to full synthetic.

Turbo engines are especially harsh on the oil (and in turn harsh on engine damage). Yet full synthetic oils protects engines well.

    good Luck...
It matters, either the oil cap on the engine will say, or your owners manual and use what they suggest to use.
i like to stick with 1 brand, but thats me. theres alot of good oil on the market, except quaker state.
it should say under the hood/bonnet what to use probably calls for 5w30 but a good 10w30 wont hurt
It matters. Look in the owners manual, it will tell you.

What happens if I don't change the oil in my car every 3000 miles?

I usually change it every 5000. I just hate changing my oil. What happens if I don't change the oil in my car every 3000 miles?
The cleaner the oil and the better oil quality results in longer engine life. Follow the manufacturer's reccomendations or a more frequent schedule. An alternative is to use a synthetic oil which allows less frequent intervals. Failure to follow manufacturer recommended intervals can void warranty if any is remaining. What happens if I don't change the oil in my car every 3000 miles?
in the short term nothing will happen, but in the long term it may be costly!
it shouldnt hurt it as long as you arent running it really low on oil between changes
The factory required maintenance for oil change is usually between 3 thousand and 3500 miles. Putting it off until 5000 miles probably won't hurt anything immediately. However, it may cost you down the road though.
It should be ok, unless your car leaks alot of oil, or burns some off. Just have to keep an eye on your oil levels from time to time. Or there'd be big consequences later.
If you don't change your oil at 3000 miles, your oil will have more than 3000 miles up to the mileage when you do change it.
once every 10,000 miles will do. Just do not allow it to run low on oil. Add oil when necessary. So just once per year is plenty.
go synthetic oil, you can go up to 6k before another change, oh yea, if you don't change your oil you can damage your engine,Thus, your mommy and daddy have to buy you another car, your gonna tear up again.
