Should car &oil & coal Companies be held liable for coastal damages and other $ loss to private citizens?

Their products are major players in GW. Shouldn't the ciigarrette suits set a precedent?Should car %26amp;oil %26amp; coal Companies be held liable for coastal damages and other $ loss to private citizens?
No that isnt the answer, the government however has an obligation to establish some rules on vehicles and emissions that address the current circumstance realistically.

There is no reason we cant force fleets to get 30+ MPG, be zero emissions etc etc. The technology is there, this is ridiculous.Should car %26amp;oil %26amp; coal Companies be held liable for coastal damages and other $ loss to private citizens?
YOU BET YOUR SWEET BIPPY THEY THEY SHOULD. They rake billions in profits-block development of alternate fuel supplies-raise the $ for gas every time a polition sneezes on tv-- They have a monopoly on this so why should they not be held responsible for the damage done to the earth and the atmosphere.
No, this is garbage. Please place in the appropriate container. Please do not recycle as it is toxic.
Yes, but only if they are directly linkable. Frivolous lawsuits are a waste to the enviornment also.
Why should they? They have no control over the people who choose to build their homes in areas they KNOW are prone to natural disasters. Their products don't have anything at all to do with ';coastal damages';. If you want to blame anyone, blame the ';private citizens'; who build there and directly contribute to the damage. No one who voluntarily (and that includes all of them) chooses to live in a disaster prone area should ever get any assistance from the Federal Government or anyone else to replace what gets lost from their own stupidity. Of course, if you want to use the ill conceived suits against cigarette companies as a model, go ahead. Those should never have been done either. No one forces people to smoke either, they do it in spite of knowing it MAY or may not, contribute to their earlier demise.
Who do you hold responsible for a natural event, ie: An Ice Age? They happen every ten thousand years. Guess what? It's time!
You seem to be taking it for fact that there is a link between human activity and 'global warming'.
No. There is no direct link. They are not causing the problem. What about gun manufacturers? Why aren't you going after them? Both Honda and Ford make cars. Hondas are more efficient. How are going to allocate the costs between the good manufacturers and the bad? There are electric cars available for purchase. Is it Ford's fault that they make and people buy huge gas guzzling SUVs? They believe that they make what people are going to buy. There are bicycles available, yet nearly everyone buys a gasoline driven vehicle. Is it the manufactures fault that there is no available public transportation that I want to ride to get me to work?
Our economy is based off the use of those products. No energy, no jobs. This isn't like cigarettes. The government built the roads and encourages, uses, and benefits from their use. What we need is tort reform, not more lawsuits.
The sun is a major player in global warming too. Maybe we ought to sue people who make sun roofs. Volcanos produce green house gases... lets sue Hawaii. Get real.
