No oil in my car! I don't know for how long. How long can you go without oil before engine damage, and how can

you tell if your engine was damaged? No oil in my car! I don't know for how long. How long can you go without oil before engine damage, and how can
Baloney. You have to learn to read a dipstick. A car low on oil would start to clang and bang like an old diesel, and a person could not possibly miss the noise before damage was done. A car with no oil would clang and bang at start-up. If anybody drive it like that, you wouldn't have to worry about damage, because the car would stop, engine seized, long before you got to your destination. No oil in my car! I don't know for how long. How long can you go without oil before engine damage, and how can
Damage occurs every second the car is running.
Like everyone else says, if you are low on oil you are not lubricating the moving parts.

That produces friction/heat which generally sheds small particles .

Those particles begin to rub and you have a sandpaper effect with more particles rubbing.

As gaps form the close fitting parts begin to move back and forth in ways that they are not supposed to (rod knocking or valve chattering). that hammers away at something

which knocks off more particles.

which also produces more heat which will eventually weaken some metal and surely blow a radiator.

ALL of this starts within minutes of being out of or significantly low on oil.. and NONE of it is reverseable.

.
not very long!if you keep driving it, you will soon hear rod bearings knocking. you better get some oil in that motor, or it wont take very long, you will lock up the engine.
Is it out of oil, or was it just so low it didn't register on the dip stick? My Fiance` is notorious for not checking her oil on her beater car, and I often have to dump 2 quarts into it to get it up to the good mark. Most cars have a 5 quart capacity, so she still had 60% of her oil in there, but still..it's not really healthy for an engine. That car has over 310,000 miles on it, so I'm not really concerned about where the oil's going-I know it's burning it. Basically, if it's knocking or ticking, or if it smokes blue-those are the signs of engine damage from low oil. Keep a better eye on your oil level- the reasons it's low could be that you've got a bad gasket, it's got some issues and it's using oil, or it could be simple things like the oil filter wasn't tight enough, or the drain plug was loose(or there could've been dirt around the gasket of either the oil filter or drain plug not letting them get a good seal). Just get into the habit of checking the oil once a week, until you figure out how fast it uses oil, then you can pretty much tell when it's time to dump in a quart.
put oil in and run it, thats all you can do at this point. some damage has occured, the important thing to do is find out why there was no oil.
PUT some damn oil in it. You should never run an engine with out oil in it.Damage will occur almost immediately
Catastophic engine damage can occur within minutes if the engine is run without oil. I would be more concerned why the ';idiot'; light on the dash didn't warn you of low oil pressure. Oil pressure is directly linked to oil capacity in the crankcase.

If the engine sounds like a clattering pile of junk making banging, clanging and clunking noises you've never heard before, or you look like you're fumigating for mosquitos as you drive down the road, then in all likelyhood, the motor is toast.
That's odd since your engine wud be damaged in the same very second it runs out of oil... It wud be damaged Even with a little of it... check the ';lights'; on your front panel.

Oh and if you don't know about engines, you better call someone who does and he can tell you about taken damage... but in mean time, just don't turn on your car
i had a 1992 toyota corolla and it had no oil for just over a year i was trying to kill that car and it never happened so i just traded it
With no oil, your motor will last about 20 seconds. If the oil is low, which means that the motor is getting oiled but now sufficiently, the motor could last for a year but damage is taking place. If your motor is damaged, you'll see blue smoke coming out the exhaust when you start it and when you release the accelerator on the highway. If there is a whole pile of damage, you'll hear a knocking sound in the engine.
