Stick with the oil you have been using. Probably a good 10w-30.What type of oil do I need for an older car?
If it was my car, I would use Castrol syntec 5w-30 and a honda oil filter.
But if you don't want to spend that kind of money on oil, try Castrol GTX High Mileage and honda oil filter.
Your car is a 99, so it's not that old. You shouldn't have any problem using synthetic oil. You can also drive longer with out having to change your oil when you use synthetic oil.
So all in all, you will spend the same amount of money, but you will get more protection from synthetic oil because it is more stable in Extreme temperature hot or cold. good luck.
Carol, if you have the 99 Civic Si, use SAE 5W-30. Check with your manual to confirm. Some 99 Civics have SAE W-20 in their manuals so be careful. It is best to follow your OEM recommendation to obtain the fuel economy benefits. Any major oil brand that is API-licensed should do the job.
Due to the high mileage, suggest you use the ';High Mileage Oil'; API, SL/SM. This formulation contains a seal conditioner which helps reduce oil leakage brought about by old seals. Even if you do not have leaks, it is still of your benefit to get a high mileage oil. Good luck.
If it not leaking or smoking, you should use what the manufacturer states. You could use a high mileage oil that will help seal up the engine a little if it leaks.
oil is oil. any kind would do.
Honda has it's own requirements that can be found int he owner's manual. Personally, I would only use Mobil One or ELF oil in the proper weight. The oilo you use should be labeled approved for use in Honda vehicles. Quick lube oil, in general, is bulk oil, sold at discounts, has lower specifications. Good Luck!!
I expect it has been serviced with what the manufacturer recommends and I would stick with that. If you are not sure, look for servicing stickers. If you have just gotten it you may be able to find out the previous owner and contact them.
I was going to say 30 unless you have been using something else or your car manual says something else. Sometimes it goes by the weather.
