The oil leak is very likely from the valve cover gaskets, but that's not going to cause your engine not to start. The alternator is responsible for maintaining the battery charge as well as providing electrical power for the car once it is running, not for starting it.
Since you've replaced the battery, we'll rule that one out.
Assuming that when you turn the key to the Run position your dashboard warning lights come on, the next question would be this:
What sound (if any) does your car makes when you try to crank the engine over?
1. A single click. Very likely a starter problem. If your starter has not been recently replaced and is not under a warranty, try tapping gently on it with a piece of wood and then starting it again. This can jar the starter into a new position where it may start. This is not a permanent fix, but may get you moving and prevent having to tow the vehicle.
2. Multiple, rapid clicks. Unlikely since it usually indicates a bad battery. This happens when the battery does not have sufficient power to get the starter turning. It can also happen with poor connections at the battery, so make sure your battery terminals are tight and making good contact.
3. No sound. While it still may be a bad starter, you can add a bad ignition switch, clutch switch (for manuals) or transmission park/neutral switch (for automatics) to the list. In this case, at least a voltmeter or test light and knowledge of how the circuit works would be required.
4. No sound/click coupled with the dash lights going out. Turning the key off and waiting 10-20 seconds results in the dash lights being on again and the same behavior. This shows a bad connection, usually located at the battery terminals. Removed the cable ends from the battery, clean any oxidation with a wire brush and securely reattach.
5. Engine cranks, but does not actually start. Oh, where to begin? This moves to a more advanced diagnostic stage and cannot be adequately covered without more information.
On a side note, I'd get that oil leak fixed, too - it will eventually cause damage to rubber and electrical components. My car Alternator is covered in oil please help?
Well from what you said it would depend on where the alt is. If it is underneath the car, I would guess it was an oil pan leak.
But this has nothing to do with it starting.
All the alt does is charge the battery and has nothing to do with starting. I Would have the starter checked as this is what really starts the car.
You didn't say if the car is cranking or not.
well bring it in or if u can do it, change your get a new alternator, replace your valve gaskets. unbolt and unplug the alternator bring it in and get it matched and ordered or bought if they have it in stock bold it back in and plug it in and whala u have a new and workin alternator. now for you valve gaskets it pretty simple. unbolt the cover take off the gasket replace it and get that rubber sealtn they use to hod it in place and to help keep compressions. sound like a lot of work but really... its not. saves u more than having a shop do it, alot more.
Did it die while parked or while driving? With how bad you make the oil leak sound and where it is located it sounds like you cracked the head or the block. You may need a new motor, but this problem requires you were driving and it died. It would have made a lot of noise when it happened. That is the worst case scenario, I hope I am wrong.
your valve cover gaskets are probably leaking causing the oil to spray all over it...that would be about the only think i could think of...
